Alcohol causes hang overs and headaches by multiple mechanisms.
Alcohol prevents the release of a hormone called vasopressin. This results in frequent urination, acts like a diuretic and results in dehydration. To compensate, blood vessels expand to increase blood flow to the brain. This often results in headaches.
Congeners are byproducts of alcohol fermentation. These are associated with inflammation. Sugars contained in alcoholic beverages or mixed in with alcohol cause a blood sugar spike and crash. This is also associated with inflammation and can be associated with migraines. Alcohol is associated with vital electrolyte losses; sodium, chloride and potassium will result in weakness. Mineral losses; magnesium, zinc and selenium result in weakness, headaches and fatigue. Alcohol inhibits the absorption of B vitamins and zinc. This leads to inflammation and fatigue.
Alcohol acts like a sedative, it suppresses melatonin. This causes poor sleep quality. Magnesium losses are also associated with poor sleep, anxiety and headaches.
