Dehydration in winter.
Cold weather suppresses the body’s natural thirst response. There is also an increased work of breathing in the cold. Low humidity results in increased insensible fluid losses. High altitude increases urinary losses.
The body maintains a core temperature by various regulatory means. Cold weather results in “cold diuresis” this is the body’s way to prevent hypothermia, It is not uncommon to lose 1-2 liters of fluids in colder climates. This increases the risk of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
Hydrate frequently with fluid and electrolytes in the colder weather. Wear breathable fabrics to minimize fluid and electrolyte loss.
