Do we need sugar to rehydrate?

  • Lots of rehydration solutions and powders intentionally include glucose.

  • This is based on a hydration strategy coined by WHO to intentionally include glucose.

  •  This was developed for people with severe dehydration with limited access to adequate healthcare. These individuals often had dysentery and cholera.

  • Glucose is important in SGLT1. Most leading hydration brands use glucose in daily hydration products.

  • Fructose is a fruit sugar, this should not be used. Studies have shown that fructose can worsen dehydration.

  • Bottom line. Glucose makes sense when suffering from severe dehydration, during intense extended periods of exercise. We do not need glucose in everyday hydration practices.
