Energy drinks provide a quick boost of energy with ingredients designed to help mental focus and physical performance. The main ingredient is often caffeine, The Caffeine content can vary from 50 mg to 500 mg. Caffeine is a psychoactive substance, it stimulates the nervous system and reduces fatigue. It enhances dopamine signaling making it addictive. This may be one mechanism involved in Caffeine withdrawal. Caffeine intake of greater than 400 mg is regarded as unsafe. High caffeine intake can be associated with palpitations, rapid heart rate, anxiety, high blood pressure, tremors and inability to sleep or stay asleep. Caffeine also works like a diuretic often causes insensible volume losses.
